The Advancement Student Leadership Team, a new leadership program this year, is designed to bring current students and Alumni together in efforts to help the Grand View community.
There are three main objectives behind the formation of this leadership team: First to engage current students with our alumni through various alumni events. Second to engage students in the community by being involved in corporate chamber events and getting students exposure in the community. Third to use this group as a target group or core to teach students about philanthropy, giving back and making a difference in the community.
Heather Schmidt, director of annual giving and organizer of the Advancement Student Leadership Team, said students need to learn about the philanthropy involved in the financial aid packages they receive.
"Much of those funds had to come from donors. People have given the scholarship dollars and money for grants. It's important that the students realize the money doesn't just come out of nowhere," she said.
Another main goal of this leadership program is to teach students how to be able to go into a room of 50 people, walk up to someone and introduce themselves while feeling comfortable, as well as making sure the person they're talking to is comfortable.
To reach this goal, students will go to the alumni events as more of an engagement, and talk to the alumni about what's happening on campus, the things that the students are involved in and the opportunities they have at Grand View.
Alumni events are typically scheduled once a month. March's event was the Harlem Globetrotter game. An Iowa Speedway event will be held in June and an I Cubs event later this summer, to name a few typical events.
"Next year, homecoming will be the huge event for the team," Schmidt said.
"This has been the first year for the Advancement Leadership Team, so notifications to students about the program were sort of last minute," Schmidt said.
