Campus Fellowship hosted Hope Week March 2-5 to raise funds for victims of the Haitian earthquake and Moldova, the poorest country in Europe.
Funds raised will be divided between Lutheran World Relief, a nonprofit organization benefiting Haiti, and Wings of Hope International, a nonprofit organization founded by Alec Zama, assistant professor of business administration, benefiting Moldova.
"There are lots of reasons we do Hope Week," Liz VanderSchel, art education junior, said. "The obvious reason is to raise money for Moldova and Haiti. We also want to follow Jesus Christ and be active in what's going on here at Grand View."
Events planned for the week include: Thrift for Hope, a sale in the Student Center where all items are priced from $1-3; Impressions of Hope, a silent auction of artwork featuring local artists; Hoops for Hope, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament; Rock for Hope, a rock concert featuring local bands; and Redeeming for Hope, a can-recycling drive.
"This year we collected from different neighborhoods than we did last year," Ashley Sowder, secondary education sophomore, said. "We handed out 2,000 bags to the West Des Moines and Ankeny community. We sort through the clothes and we pick out things that would sell to college students, everything that we don't use we donate to Hope Ministries."
During the past two years, Campus Fellowship has raised almost $6,000 to improve healthcare and living conditions in Moldova. The goal of Campus Fellowship this year is to raise $6,000 for both Haiti relief efforts and Moldova.
