Des Moines Winter Games offer students exicting time

The Des Moines Winter Games 2010 kick off tonight with a late-night party from 9 p.m. to midnight. The party will include live music, Shotski drink specials and more. Admission to the Polar Plunge requires three canned food items.
Throughout the weekend the Des Moines Winter Games will be bringing all kinds of outdoor activities for ages two through 80. Events include the snoX snowmobile competition, snow sculpting competition, ski and snowboard competition, snowball softball tournament, snow bowl flag football tournament and many more activities.
The ski and snowboard competition begin tonight following the Polar Plunge. The entry fee is $15 plus the lift ticket. The competition is slope style followed by Big Air/Best Trick. Ski and snowboard classes are offered for any one.
The ever-popular cardboard sled races are back again for 2010. Competitors will go head-to-head against other homemade sleds made out of cardboard. The entrance fee to the competition is $15, which includes costs of cardboard, paint and Duct tape.
The sleds will be judged on speed, style and craftsmanship. The contest starts on Saturday.
"I wish I would have heard about the Des Moines Winter Games sooner," Janae Teclaw graphic design junior said, "This looks like it would be tons of fun. I would have definitely done the broomball if I would have heard about it sooner."
Sunday at Easter Lake there will be the ice fishing derby. Registration starts at 6 a.m. with competition begins at 8 a.m. The entry free is $15 and the derby will be "big fish" format. The prize list for the fishing derby includes a strikemaster 6" electra laser power auger, vexilar FL-12 pro pack fish finder, lam "Summit" hub-style portable ice shack, mora hand augers, Bass Pro Shops complete ice fishing combos and Dave Genz ice fishing combos.
For parents looking to teach their children how to fish, there will be the Scheels Ice Fishing Kids' Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The first 30 kids receive a free schooley ice fishing combo set.
"I think the Des Moines Winter Games is a great idea because there aren't a lot of outdoor winter activities going on in Des Moines very often," Gabby Grgurich, health promotion senior said.
