The Student Activities Council (SAC) decided to give students a night out to the Buccaneer's game last Friday. SAC routinely provides students with free and fun entertainment to attend other than on campus events. The Buccaneer's game is a new take on these free events and one of the new activities SAC has held for students this year.
"I thought it would be a good activity because I have always heard about students going to games or having an interest in going," Hallie Beeler, graphic design and graphic journalism junior and member of SAC, said. "We have been trying to include a few new activities this year and this was one of them."
The idea was a hit amongst students, with a grand total of 169 requesting tickets, noted Beeler.
"I decided to come to the game because I knew a lot of people from Grand View who were going and it is a new experience," Mackenzie Bourke, business administration management sophomore, said.
Becky White, graphic design sophomore, was also among the students who decided to attend the game because it was something new. "I wanted to do something I don't normally do, and the game was free."
The Buccaneers faced the Sioux City Musketeers in what was a great game, despite the Bucs loss. Students in the crowd cheered on the players, jarring at the Musketeers, and even singing along to the likes of classics like Aerosmith's 'Sweet Emotion' to newer sensations with Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face,' playing over the loud speakers between plays. Between periods there was a lot of socializing, a puck toss for gift certificates and prizes and even a little league hockey game.
"The best part of the night was when they played Sesame Street for the opposing team, all of the hype of the game, and most definitely when the little kids played a game in between periods," said White.
The game was a successful event for SAC and for students, one which students would want to go to again. "Yeah I would definitely go to another game," Bourke said.
Events such as these provide the students with entertainment other than the traditional movie or bowling nights. These events are fun and new, giving SAC more recognition, and more popularity on campus.
Beeler said, "I'm not sure if they will continue this activity but I hope that SAC recognizes the popularity and success of the event and at least considers doing it again."
