Two wrestlers win championship at Central

Two Vikings were crowned champions at the Central Wrestling Invitational tournament Saturday, Jan. 16 at Central College in Pella.
Ty Knowler and Jordaryln Logan were the Vikings' two standout athletes for the weekend. Knowler's road to the championship wasn't as easy as he made it look. First, he pinned William Penn's Chris Diaz in 2:25 then quickly moved onto a 7-5 decision over St. Olaf's Josef Waples.
After beating Waples, Ty Knowler moved onto his next opponent in the semi-final match where Augustana's Tyler Dempsey waited. This match was short-lived with Knowler pinning Dempsey in just 2:20 in the first period. The championship match was even quicker with Knowler winning the tournament by forfeit at 165 lbs.
Jordaryln Logan's championship weekend was eventful as well. Logan's first opponent was William Penn's Jesse Buchanan which he pinned in 3:33 in the first period. Logan then went onto win by major decision (11-0) over Matt Nykaza in the championship at 184 lbs.
On Friday Jan. 15, the No. 6 Vikings hosted the No. 7 Missouri Valley Vikings in the Sisam Arena. Although the Vikings of Missouri Valley won the meet, the Vikings still showed some bright spots throughout their banged-up lineup.
The first match of the evening started the meet off with a bang. Joe Cornejo, ranked No. 4 from Missouri Valley pinned Trae Reed, freshman 157 lbs, in 1:32. But the Vikings answered back with a pin of their own was No. 2 Brad Lower, junior at 165 lbs, pined Damon Jackson in 54 seconds.
At 174 lbs, Glenn Rhee, junior, won 10-4 over Alex McKinney. At 184 lbs. Jordayln Logan, senior, won in a decision over Jesse Alter, who was rated No. five, 3-2.
The next four matches of the night all went all Missouri Valley's way. At 197 lbs. Charlie Gibbs beat Justin Rau, sophomore, 9-6. In the heavyweight bout of the night, No. 8 Travis Evans beat Tyler Wilson, junior, by a major decision 10-1. At 125 lbs, No. 11 Paulie Hanson of beat Johnny Coleman, freshman, in a 10-7 decision. The 133 lbs, match was won by Missouri Valley's Colin Pierce in a major decision over No. 10 Travis Evans, sophomore, 9-1.
The best match of the night was at 141 lbs. Nick Coffman, sophomore, who is ranked No. 12, scored in the final seconds of the match beating No. 8 ranked Eric Graham 10-9. The evening's final match was between No. 6 Brian Graham of Missouri Valley versus Adam Kurimski junior. Graham won in a major decision 10-2.
