Green seems to be the new pink in our society and extreme environmentalism has become a new trend. But to some it is the newest hoax. Critics have debated over whether or not the earth's temperature is on the rise and what actions we, as citizens of the Earth, should take to avoid a catastrophic melting of the arctic's icecaps.
But are the facts true? There are some recent debates over whether or not scientists have fabricated or exaggerated information regarding the warming of the earth. Some critics are going so far as to call Global Warming the 'biggest scam of the modern times.'
"I don't think global warming is changing the world that drastically. People are too worried about it," Audie Baca, health promotion sophomore, said.
Scandals involving temperature data have been reported to be manipulated or withheld from the public in certain reports from the UN's 2007 Global Warming report.
According to Lord Christopher Monckton, a global warming expert and former senior policy advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the Earth's temperature has increased an average of 0.5 Celsius per century for the past 300 years. For the last seven years Earth's temperature has been falling at about 0.4 degrees Celsius, making an overall affect of no increase in the past 300 years.
Many global warming activists, such as Al Gore, claim the glaciers will be gone by the year 2035. This would cause rising shorelines, which would jeopardize cities along the coastal cities such as New York, Miami and San Francisco to name a few. Activists say if icecaps melt, sea levels could rise 20 to 30 feet causing extinction of species and extreme flooding of the Earth.
Some argue that global warming shouldn't be the cause of concern. The fact that our world is changing due to human consumption is inevitable as we enter a new decade.
"Whether global warming is or isn't the cause of our climate changes, our world needs to find sustainable resources that don't wreak havoc on our natural world. People need to be more aware of their consumption and waste," Krys Melton, pre-secondary education junior, said.
