Under the direction of Stacie Horton, competitive dance coach, they will be performing a jazz routine at 6 p.m. to "Somebody to Love" and perform a pom routine at 6:45 p.m. to a song they have titled "Kiss Remix."
The dance team women have put a lot of effort into learning these routines, Brooke Curry, graphic journalism freshman, said. Practice on the dances started all the way back in July and haven't really let up since. Even though they have been practicing the dances for a little over five months, they still are looking to improve in some areas.
In the weeks leading up to the state competition, the team practices every day. These practices seem to be more meaningful, intense and productive. This offers the last opportunity the team has to clean their routines and fix any minor details.
Lines and spacing during the routines were the biggest worries said Ashten Vonnahme, pre-nursing freshman.
During their performance, Vonnahme said, they need to make sure that they [the team] are "hitting everything as a team." Curry said the team's timing is important that they are dancing together like one. This will create a more appealing visual affect for the judges. Curry said what makes the team stand out from the rest is their energy throughout the performances.
As a team, they need to focus on jazz more because there are a lot of difficult turn sequences.
"So far, we have it down pretty well, so hopefully it will stay together at state," Curry said.
Students should go see the team perform because, as Vonnahme said, "we rock."
Team expectations are high, not only because of their No. 9 ranking by the Universal Dance Association, but also because of what Horton, in practice, has called the best team she's ever had. The team received first place in jazz last year at the state competition and the girls are looking to repeat that this year.
