A volleyball tournament fundraiser for Wings of Hope International, a non-profit organization that helps the people of Moldova, will be held November 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
The volleyball tournament fundraiser is open to anyone who wants to play and the proceeds go to help the children of Moldova. To get involved, compose a team with a minimum of six members. Teams can be co-ed and the cost is $60 per team. E-mail joe.sullivan@grandview.edu to sign up a team.
Wings of Hope International was founded by Grand View professor, Alec Zama and his wife in 2007. Professor Zama started the organization to help provide support to the elderly, the children, the sick, and other people in need from his home country of Moldova.
The elderly need assistance during their retirement years, the children need better educational opportunities and safer school buildings, and low-income people are in need of medical assistance. The schools in Moldova are without running water and the children must go to outhouses no matter what the weather is like. The proceeds from the volleyball tournament fundraiser will go towards child education and bringing running water into the school buildings.
"All of the money goes to Wings of Hope to benefit the children of Moldova." said Joe Sullivan, sports management senior, "The fundraiser will also benefit the Grand View community because it benefits Grand View with involvement in good causes."
At the tournament, there will be a donation table, free cookies and a slideshow about WHI. There will be water for sale as well as Wings of Hope t-shirts. The winning volleyball team members will win free t-shirts as well.
"We want a lot of people to want to participate in the tournament. We want involvement and we are looking for a good turnout." said Lindsey Cosgriff, business management junior.
Students recently held a Younkers coupon book fundraiser to support Wings of Hope International for $5 each and sold 93 coupon books bringing the total to $465 raised.
"We are very very grateful to our students who are putting this together. Sometimes we in the U.S. think that what we do will not make a difference for a cause, but the funds will make a huge difference in Moldova. We are so very grateful." said Zama.
