It is 11:59 p.m Thanksgiving night, and thousands of people are lining up, counting down the seconds until 12:01a.m, when the doors will open at Jordan Creek Town Center, officially signaling the start to the 2009 holiday shopping season.

The day after Thanksgiving is known in the United States as Black Friday. Black Friday is considered to be the kickoff to the holiday shopping season in the United States making it one of the busiest shopping days of the year. This day became "Black Friday" in the 1960's. It was called this because during this time accounting books were kept in red and black ink; red for a profit loss, black for a gain. This day is crucial for business, it helps them guage their sales for the rest of the year. This day dates back decades, even though this day wasn't always termed "Black Friday." People have been rushing to the stores since the beginning of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in 1924.

All the malls in Des Moines are opening early for the Black Friday rush, with Jordan Creek Town Center opening up the earliest, at 12:01 a.m. Jordan Creek Town Center has held an event on Black Friday morning for the last three years according to a member of the mall's management team.

The event is called "Rockin Shoppin' Eve" and in the past it has brought in 70,000 people to the mall between 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. The event is a new way to enhance the shopping experience. The total number of people shopping on Black Friday at Jordan Creek has reached 190,000 people, and they [the management team] expect the number to be the same this year. The mall will have free hot chocolate, coffee, and popcorn for those waiting in line, and the Grace Church Choir will be outside singing Christmas Carols to bring holiday cheer.

The Black Friday extravaganza can bring out the best and the worst in holiday shoppers, especially in the early morning hours. Krystle Vasquez, Forever 21 Co-Manager hopes for a good selling day, "each year we learn from Black Friday, and this year I expect to have a smooth day."
