An assortment of hors d'oeuvre, spirits and punch were accompanied by a reception of artwork presented by their alumni artists in Elings-Wood Center for Art and Design in the Rasmussen Center from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, October 23.

The exhibit, which has been on display since October 2, features art completed by 13 Grand View alumni who are all currently working professionally.? While serving primarily as a chance for alumni to discuss and present their artwork and accomplishments, many artists and attendees said there was a deeper significance behind it all.

Angela Meron, '05 graduate, presented an audiovisual piece amidst a strong showing of paintings at the reception.

"It's a great way to show what the alumni are up to these days," Meron said. This is Meron's second showing this year.

Jacque Roate, visual arts and graphic design '03, presented work for the first time in the Rasmussen Center this year but has previously entered work in other shows.

"I think it's motivational for the students. It really shows how far you can go," Roate said.

Chris Roberts, graphic design '96, presented work for the first time this year, and made a similiar claim about the importance the exhibit held.

"It serves a good connection between alumni, but it also serves as a way to connect to students," Roberts said. Roberts went on to explain the importance of art, and how his piece connected him to his childhood.

"It's really nostalgic," Roberts said. "It's helped connect me to my inner kid." Roberts presented a piece inspired by He-Man action figures.

While alumni were the majority of attendees, there were a few others who came to gaze upon the accomplishments of these alumni. However, in the case of Jane Rider, mother of alumni Jeff Rider, who also had work on display, it was a time to behold the wonder and majesty of the art form and to celebrate her son's accomplishments.

"It's great to be surrounded by art," Rider said. "It really is inspirational."

The reception was the second exhibit of artwork shown in Rasmussen this year.
