Grand View hosted Nursing Action Day at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 16 as a way to introduce prospective students, including high school upperclassmen and transfer students to the nursing field.

Johnson said, "[Nursing Action Day] is designed to showcase Grand View's nursing program and expose them [prospective students] to the world of nursing, classes and clinicals."

After the campus tour, where the prospective students visited the residence halls and various campus buildings, and a short break, prospective nursing students broke into groups and went to "Nursing in Action Events."

In the "Hands-on in the Nursing Lab" segment prospective students went into the Center for Learning and used stethoscopes on the mannequins and used GloGerm, a lotion that glows under black light to show what areas of the hands are missed when washing.

Students took part in a student-to-student panel facilitated by Judy Myers, department chair and assistant professor of nursing, where prospective students asked current students what being a nursing student is like. Johnson said the student-to-student panel is a way for prospective students to find out what life is like being a nursing student.

The prospective students asked questions about applying and getting into the nursing program, nPOD, a living and learning community for pre-nursing students in Nielsen Hall, and balancing athletics and school.

Ashlee Whitfield, nursing student and dance team member, said, "All of the coaches are really understanding. Academics always come first."

Prospective students also participated in a hands-on nursing lab facilitated by Maggie Peterson, a lab assistant and a "Drugs 'R Us" segment with Liz Cox, Assistant Professor of Nursing.

Cox said the "Drugs R Us" segment is designed to expose prospective nursing students to "nursing math."

Sam Grett, nursing senior, said, "It is a how-to of drug calculations, which is a big part of being a nurse - stuff you encounter everyday when you start working."

While the prospective students were rotating in the "Nursing in Action Events", parents and guests went a question and answer panel with Johnson, Pauling, Jay Prescott, Vice President of Student Affairs, and Deb Barger, Vice President for Enrollment. Prescott discussed student life and what activities are available for students and Barger answered financial aid questions.

Then students and parents met back-up and listened to closing and wrap-up comments from Johnson and Pauling. Prospective students left with a Grand View t-shirt and information about admission.

Johnson said Grand View has hosted a Nursing Action Day since 2002.
