When I applied to be sports editor, people kept asking me, "Can a girl be the sports editor? Do girls really know that much about sports?"
My answer to that question is, "YES."
Have you ever noticed the number of women sports reporters on TV? In almost every episode of Sports Center at least one of the hosts is a woman. How about during NFL football games? The sideline reporters are either former football players or women. Yes, most of the time they are women because they're pretty to look at, but they still have to know what is going on.
Almost every morning before I go to class, I watch Sports Center to hear what's going on in the world of sports or to check scores from the night before. Whenever I have free time during the day, I turn on EPSN and watch the different sports talk shows. I also check the Iowa Girls Union website to look at stats, score and rules. When I watch the news at ten, the part that is really important to me is the last five minutes…the sports.
Ask my friends if they like sitting by me at basketball games. I can guess their answer will be no, especially when I'm yelling in the ear most of the time. What can I say, I get into the game.
When a guy asks a woman, "What do you like to do on the weekends in the fall?" Some women answer, "Well, I like to watch college football on Saturdays and the NFL on Sundays." This is every guys dream answer but most of the time women just say it because it is the right answer and they'll get the guy. When I answer that question…I'm telling them the truth.
I've always been involved with sports. I started playing softball in first grade, basketball in second, volleyball in fifth and running track in seventh. I was a four sport athlete in high school. That's what you do when you go to a small 1A school. You go from one sport to the next.
My real passion is coaching. My sister is three years younger than me, so I've had the opportunity to coach (or help) her volleyball team since they were in fifth grade. It's hard to believe their now seniors. I love to help young girls learn a game that as taught me so much in life. One of the most important lessons I've learned is don't be afraid to make a mistake, learn from it and move on.
Since I was a little kid, I've collected sports newspaper articles. I love to read about teams that overcome adversities, or coaches that teach lessons about life though sports or athletes that have worked hard over years to get to where they are. Sports bring out the best in people.
This is way girls can be sports editors.
