The art club will travel to Chicago October 16-18 to visit the annual Around the Coyote festival in Chicago. The art club has not attended the festival since its first student trip to Chicago in 1975.
Gallery owner Jim Happy-Delpech began the Around the Coyote Festival in 1989 to promote and expose the art community of Chicago to its citizens. Since then the festival has grown to be a major part of the artistic culture of the city and features numerous multi-media artists.
"The students get to see firsthand the incredible art from the past and present - art they might not have been able to see otherwise." Cindy Fleagle, assistant professor of art and faculty advisor of the art club, said. "We go to Chicago because of the galleries and the Art Institute of Chicago. There is a ton of culture in Chicago."
Fleagle reserved the bus that will take the students to Chicago and booked the hotel they will stay at. She said that she hopes that the artists the students meet at the festival will influence them and help give them new ideas to hone their skills.
Tammy Smith, graphic design-visual art senior, said the six-hour bus ride was the thing she least anticipated. Smith was responsible for communicating with Viking Council and getting their approval for the trip.
Smith said 39 spots are left, and until Sept. 14 only art club members are allowed to sign up. Any students interested in coming after that date need to get the pay agreement form from the art club's page under the campus life section of Grand View's website. The trip costs $200 and will need to be turned in to the Business Office with form by Sept. 18.
