Grand View and the city of Des Moines want students to be involved in volunteering. Des Moines has many volunteer events happening every day. But where are these opportunities located and why should people help?

Currently, the Des Moines area is hosting a few events and is looking for volunteers. The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau hosts sporting events, concerts, festivals and meetings, some needing volunteers. To sign up for these events and others, you can get information at the Des Moines International Airport or contact Angela Broderson at 515-699-3465.

Students also volunteer for many events on campus. The Grand View Nursing Student Association (GVNSA) needs volunteers for to help at the Latino Festival. The group will be coordinating the children's activity area of the festival. Volunteers for the festival will be able to attend the festival for free and have the fun of working with children. Volunteers would help with paper flower making, face painting, piñata breaking, face painting and much more. This volunteer experience is needed on September 19 and 20 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days.

To sign up, please email Angella Gonzalez with the times available to work, vice president of GVNSA.

"Speaking as a future nurse, I believe that nurses serve the a broader community," Gonzalez said. "At the core of the social responsibility of nurses is community service."

Another campus group involved in volunteering is the Viking Volunteers. The Viking Volunteers are some Grand View students who help make the community a better place. Heidi Pries, faculty advisor of the group, said, "Volunteering is important because you give back to the community. Volunteering helps you see the big picture. You might find a new passion, and [it] gives you practical experiences."

The group has volunteered in many activities, including helping flood relief victims, Reggie's Sleepout, Adopt a Family and many others.
