Last weekend the men's and women's track teams competed in the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake University. Once again it was a successful weekend for both teams, qualifying three members for Nationals which will be held Maay 21-23 in Edwardsville Ill.

The two qualifiers from the women's team were Obsie Burru, freshman and Laura Schiltz, senior. Burru qualified in the 5,000m run and the 1,500m run taking first place in both races. Burru ran a school record in the 5,000m finishing with a time of 17:45.56. She also set a school record in the 1,500m with a time of 4:43.15. Both times were good enough for the NAIA "A" standard.

Schiltz qualified in the javelin, breaking the school record with a throw of 41.51m. Schiltz placed second at the meet, but still made the NAIA "A" standard national qualifying mark.

Jordan Adams, senior, from the men's team, qualified for Nationals last weekend for the second time. Adams finished sixth in the hammer throw with a final mark of 48.43m.

After the meet Adams said, "I did well and it's always fun to put up a good fight when competing against the big universities."

Adams said he is looking forward to competing at Nationals at the end of May.

The men's 4x400 and 4x100 teams also had a good showing at the Jim Duncan Invitational. In the 4x400 Matt Smalley, junior; Phil Cooper, sophomore; Steven Hughes, senior, and Brian Dewey, junior, placed fifth and finished with a school record time of 3:23.69. Also the 4x100 team of Lawrence Furlow, freshman; Jarvis Henderson, freshman; Titus Bland, junior, and Cooper, finished fourth with a time of 42.46. The time was only .01 seconds away from qualifying them for Nationals.

Head track and field coach Jerry Monner said, "It was a good meet for us and we were happy to get three more events qualified for nationals."

Both track teams will be in action this weekend at the University of Dubuque Spartan Open in Dubuque, IA. Monner said the team is looking forward to the meet because it gives them a chance run on the same track that the MCC Championships will be held on. The conference meet takes place April 30-May 1.
