Issue date: 4/17/09 Section: Opinion
When Susan Murphy, voice of Reese Witherspoon, is hit by a powerful Quantonium meteorite causing her to grow to enormity, she is labeled Ginormica and put in a Top Secret governmental prison with other monsters who have been captured over time. It doesn't take long for her to make friends with Dr. Cockroach Ph.D, voice of Hugh Laurie, The Missing Link, voice of Will Arnett, B.O.B., voice of Seth Rogen, and Insectosaurus. Just when she's starting to believe they will be trapped there forever, Alien lord Gallaxhar , voice of Rainn Wilson, arrives to take the Quantonium and destroy earth. The government decides to fight the alien threat with their own monsters and release the odd group of five to save the world from Gallaxhar in exchange for their own freedom.
Most of the humor in "Monsters Vs. Aliens" is aimed toward children, but it mixes in a handful of references only adults will understand, including political and anatomical jabs. While it has it's fair share of comedic moments, it's painfully obvious when the script is forced for random laughs in the 94 minutes of adventure.
It's not quite up to par with the pure wit of Shrek, and the plot not twisted enough to keep me guessing as in Pixar films, but in spite of the occasional failed attempts and predictable plotline, it was still worth the ticket price.
The 3D aspect of the film was not entirely what was expected. It was less of a shock factor and more of a subconscious addition. By the time it was half-over, I forgot I was even wearing my 3D glasses. I'm not quite sure if it would make much of a difference without the 3-dimentions, but it did add a nice touch in a few scenes. It made it a little more worthwhile when my eyes adjusted after about 10 minutes.
Grossing about $60 million opening weekend, it took first place for the weekend and ranks as the third highest-grossing of March behind "300" and "Ice Age: The Meltdown."
With a Friday night crowd of about 20 people, it still extracted some laughs from the small audience and seemed to leave the impression it was a "cute" movie with some good messages about looking beyond appearances and self-confidence.
Although the price for two added up to about $24 at Century theaters, I would recommend this for lighthearted comedy. Plus, its PG-rating makes it a movie parents could watch with their kids.
I rate this movie three and a half stars and recommend seeing it with family and friends.
