Editor says goodbye to year full of news

Issue date: 4/17/09 Section: Opinion
It would be cliché to say this year has gone by faster than I ever thought possible, but nothing is closer to the truth.
When I started out this year as editor-in-chief of The Grand Views, I figured my time here would seem longer than nine months. To the surprise of all of the editors, we had breaking news for nearly every issue, which moved things along quicker than imagined.
News is my life and I hope it always will be. So of course I felt honored to be at the helm of the newspaper that brought the Grand View community the stories that have shaped this school year.
Stories like how the brand new football team brought about victorious first-season wins, as well as disrupting incidents in residence halls on campus. And the housing crisis which urged our staff writers to ask administrators the tough questions about the fate of student life on campus.
We followed the men's basketball and new wrestling teams to national competitions and made one of the first announcements about Grand View's name change to university.
Events like the annual PRIDE Drag Show and a visit by the royal family of Denmark made memorable front pages of The Grand Views for readers and staffers alike.
All in all, it's been a really good run; more than I could have ever expected. And without our readers-both disgruntled and appreciative-that would not have been possible. In fact, we wouldn't have a purpose without you. So, thank you for all of your hate mail, compliments and most of all, for picking up the newspaper each Friday.
I also want to thank my staff of 11 editors for helping me make it through this year. We had to make a lot of changes in the beginning and at semester, which took us a while to adjust to, but I couldn't have done it without the help of all of you. Whether it was emotional support to help me keep going or design and editing support to keep each other going, you've all been wonderful to me.
In regards to next year, I have faith the next editor-in-chief, Derek Hart, will lead a brand new staff to bring you more breaking news, an engaging feature section and full coverage on all sports going on. I also hope to contribute with a weekly news column about the things going on around campus that matter to you. Watch for that next year.
But as for now, I'll say thank you again. It's been a good run.
