Spirit, character, community, involvement, diversity, academics, leadership and pride are the eight characteristics one must posses to be considered a true Viking. These criteria led the Student Leadership Team to choose Carrie Christensen, psychology and biology junior, as the March Viking of the Month.
Christensen is no stranger to dedicating countless hours of her free time volunteering to help better the lives of others while representing the Viking Volunteers. Her devotion went to such great lengths that she was elected to be the Viking Volunteers president for the 2009-2010 school year.
Christensen's efforts have gone great distances, as she coordinated a large portion of the college's participation with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. She engaged other students to join her in representing Grand View in the walk for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
That one effort wasn't enough for Christensen; in the same weekend she also volunteered at Kidsfest as well as joining the Viking Volunteers in playing Bingo at Luther Park.
She selflessly enjoys helping others and in effort to urge others to grasp the idea, she came up with the idea for Random Acts of Kindness Week. It was a week-long, Viking Volunteers sponsored campus-wide project during the first week of April.
Christensen has not limited her work to Iowa. She used her spring break to participate in a service trip and helped with Campus Clean-Up Day within days of returning. She dedicated time to selling shoes for Tasty Tacos Night. The soccer game between the students and the faculty was another of Christensen's volunteer efforts.
"Carrie works very hard with Viking Volunteers and is very reliable," said Kent Schornack, director of leadership and counseling.
"She sees volunteerism and making a positive difference to others as a part of her calling and responsibility."
Heidi Pries, director of student involvement and new student programs said, "She is a compassionate person who is driven to serve others." "She enjoys serving and doesn't expect to be given the credit for her work," said Pries.
"Carrie works two part time jobs, along with her school work and is a good student yet she is not too busy to serve," said Pries. "I think others can learn from Carrie that no matter how busy you think you are you can find time to serve in the community and get involved."
