The choir has been rehearsing individual pieces to present in the annual Spring Soiree Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the choir room in the Student Center. Admission is free and the concert will last approximately two hours.
"The Soiree gives choir members a chance to showcase their talents individually," Kathryn Duffy, professor of music and director of choral activities, said.
Duffy said some members are nervous to perform alone in front of people because they have become accustomed to singing as a group, while others are eager to try something different.
The concert will present a variety of music from jazz, to the arts, to Broadway and will be done as a solo, group or instrumental performance. One song will be the theme music from the western television series, Rawhide, which was sampled by Wal-Mart for their 'Roll Back' commercials. Ryan Schmitt, music education sophomore, will perform it and is also playing the trumpet in an instrumental piece later in the program.
"The Soiree allows people to do expressive pieces they may not usually do," Schmitt said.
Everyone was allowed to choose their own music as long as it remained within a certain parameter of genres, but Duffy said there are members singing pieces that do not fit into any particular category.
"There are a couple of guys singing Hallelujah from Shrek," she said.
Other pieces include songs from Phantom of the Opera, the Wizard of Oz, Annie and current artists such as Taylor Swift.
Each member has their own reason why they picked their particular music but, Chelsea Carter, nursing freshmen, is singing for her mom. She is doing "The Best Day" by Taylor Swift and said it always brings a tear to her mom's eyes when she hears it.
"My mom will be even more emotional after I sing it because it will have meaning for her," she said.
Duffy said the Soiree will be a nice treat for the choir after bouncing back from the rigorous spring tour.
