Titus Bland, physical education junior and football player, was elected February's Viking of the Month. The Student Leadership Team selected Bland because of his school spirit, his caring personality and his enthusiasm.

"I'm not surprised Titus won. He is always smiling and he is super friendly," Kyana Fuchs journalism freshman and fellow classmate, said.

Bland is from Baytown, Texas, and transferred to Grand View from Iowa Central College after being recruited by Michael Woodley, head football coach.

"I loved his demeanor and that he loves to play the game. He is intent on getting a college degree and that sealed the deal for me. I'll be the first one sitting there on the front row when he gets his degree," Woodley said.

One reason Bland transferred to Grand View is because he wanted to be a part of history by joining the first football team in Grand View's history.

Bland plays safety on the football team and is a sprinter on the track team. Bland said participating in athletic programs at Grand View is extremely important to him because it allows him to develop himself and give back to the school at the same time.

"I'm a big person on school spirit. I want people to support me when I play sports," Bland said.

Bland also said that winning was unexpected and he was extremely surprised by all the emails from friends congratulating and thanking him for winning Viking of the Month.

"Winning means a lot and it shows that people appreciate me being on campus," Bland said.

The Student Leadership team chooses the winner based on the eight characteristics of "What it Means to Be a Viking," which can be found on their Web site.
