When people think about a Spring Break trip, staying in Iowa is not exactly what they imagine. According to roadsideamerica.com Iowa has some great places to offer for your Spring Break fun. The Axe Murder House in Villisca is on top of the the list of scary places to check out. The house, which is believed to be haunted, is the site of a grisly, unsolved axe murder in 1912. Need more to scare you? McGregor has a Spook Cave underground boat tour.
Iowa does have an option for those looking to go swimming. It is Kings Point Waterpark Resort in Storm Lake. They have an indoor water park so visitors can swim and hit the slides without having to worry about the temperature outside.
"Williamsburg is great for shopping, it really is a good place to go," Monika Loch, education sophomore, said.
If you're looking for a little history, Iowa has plenty of interesting things to see. Stuart has a bank robbed by Bonnie and Clyde, in Clear Lake the Buddy Holly crash site and in Adair a monument to Jesse James' first train robbery in the West.
Iowa also boasts a few "birthplaces" such as Herbert Hoover's in West Branch, John Wayne's in Winterset, Johnny Carson's in Corning and William "Buffalo Bill" Cody in LeClaire.
Here's an idea for those looking for something different, take a road trip around Iowa checking out some of the road side oddities placed around the state. The "World's Largest Popcorn Ball" in Sac City, Strawberry Point's "Worlds Largest Strawberry", the giant Muffler Man and Long Horn Steer in Waukon, the "Cemetery in the Middle of the Road" in West Des Moines, the "Worlds Largest Cheeto" in Algona, a spider made of a Volkswagen in Avoca, the two-headed calf and lamb with two rear-ends in Maquoketa, a house sided in entirely in license plates in Kincross and the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk in Riverside are all options.
For those not interested in staying in Iowa, but don't want to go too far away Chicago, Omaha and Minneapolis all have things to offer. In Chicago, there is the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Historical Museum, Museum of Science and Industry and the Navy pier to name a few. Omaha has the Henry Doorly Zoo, the Strategic Air Command Museum and the Mallory Kountze Planetarium. Minneapolis has the Mall of America, Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
