The icy cold chill of Iowa's weather doesn't stop college students all around the state from using their creativity in a face off for Iowa Winter Games best ice sculpture contest.
For the second year in a row, GVU's Snow Sculpting Contest has brought clubs and teams from Grand View, Iowa Central Community College, Drake and Buena Vista University.
"We are waiting to hear back from ISU, UNI and Simpson," said Kent Schornack, one of the coordinators of the event.
These groups have bundled up and headed to Sleepy Hollow Sports Park to reach into the depths of their creativity to try to win the traveling trophy for best mascot sculpture before.
Last year, Grand View's own Residence Hall Association won the Club and Team trophy.
"The snow was packed tight, it was really hard, we had to chisel," Austin McCool, psychology junior, said. McCool was on the winning team last year.
"Seeing all the different sculptures, watching the process of how other people created their sculptures and seeing the end results is what was most fun about the contest," McCool said.
The contest begins at 6 p.m. on Friday Jan. 30 at Sleepy Hollow Sports Park and ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31. There is no cost for admission and all students who participate can tube for free Saturday night after the judging.
Clever ideas from last year include the Drake Bulldog hugging a basketball, a giant softball provided by the Grand View softball team, a giant carefully detailed Viking and the winning sculpture was a castle with a moat.
Groups interested in participating should contact Adrian Stinson in the Student Life Office to register for the event and to pick up their pledge sheet.
Pledge sheets are offered so clubs may try to gain support for the charity of their choice. If clubs are having difficulty choosing a charity, Schornack suggests the Multicultural Leadership Fund.
