Julefest, Grand View's annual Danish Christmas festival, will feature a Danish Brotherhood celebration, two choir concerts, and a reception dedicating the Rasmussen Center Sunday, Dec. 7, on Grand View's west campus.

The day will start with the Danish Brotherhood celebration at 2:30 p.m. in the Rasmussen Center for the Danish and Grand View communities. The festivities will then move to the Luther Memorial Church for two performances from the student choir, Kantorei, and musical ensembles at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. In between the concerts will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Rasmussen Center.

Tickets for admission are free; anyone wishing to attend Julefest may contact Jane Jensen, fine arts secretary, at 263-9991 for tickets. The church and the overflow in the basement are bound to fill fast, therefore, Dr. Kathryn Duffy, choir director, urges the public to get tickets soon.

"People go to this and come away just saying 'now I'm ready to get ready for Christmas. The world isn't right until I've been to Julefest,'" Duffy said, encouraging the community to attend.

She said Christie Vilsack, wife of former governor Tom Vilsack, considers it one of the top 10 Christmas events.

The Danish Brotherhood celebration at 2:30 p.m. will kick off Julefest with Yuletide festivities including dancing around the Christmas tree, Christmas stories and paper cutting, a Danish specialty. Guests will also enjoy refreshments and other kid-friendly activities.

"God's son for a gift has been sent you this night" will be the theme of the hour and 15 minute-long concerts this year. All 16 songs sung by the 32-member choir, Kantorei and instrumental ensembles will relate to the theme and will be sung in English, Latin and German. The audience, which is expected to fill all 225 seats in the church, will have chances to sing along throughout the concert. As well as music, Pastor Jack Mithelman will be presenting readings.
