The women's soccer team went face-to-face with the Viterbo Hawks on Sunday Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. as they tasted sweet revenge.
The women dealt with the Hawks winning the game 2-1 leaving the Hawks in the dust of the Vikings. The first goal of the game was shot by Ashley Thielen, biology senior, in the first half of the game. The kick was a clean shot to the goal and straight past the Hawks goalie.
Thielen said, "The beginning of our season has really worn on our forwards who were feeling the pressure of not producing. Our team is sick of tied games and overtimes. Of course, being able to put the game on even playing ground again after their pathetic goal in the first few minutes was a huge moral booster for our team. I think I loved it just as much as any other player on our team. Viterbo embarrassed us last year and all of us tasted sweet revenge as today's goals were scored."
With a game full of blocking and only twenty minutes left in the second half, where anything could happen, Alexis Purdum, pre-physical education senior, got down on her hands and knees in attempt for a corner kick. She knocked the ball to number 22, Jessica Powers, biology freshman, to make the goal. Purdum missed the ball with her head and it hit her in the back instead, but Powers was still able to make the goal, breaking the tie of 1-1 and winning the game for the Vikings.
Powers said the best part about the game for her was "winning because last year they beat us for the conference championship and so winning this year showed we came back to those who beat us last year for the championship."
Powers also said she and the team are looking forward the conference championships and "if we come together as a team and play like we have in the last few games, we will have a good chance on getting to nationals."
Ventsi Stoimirov, head coach women's soccer and athletic success coordinator, said it was nice to play on the field again.
"We had six practices this week because it has been a while since we have played on the field. I think the girls did very well and the practices helped us win this game."
Stoimirov said all the girls are stars of the team and should be proud of themselves and each other.
