Women's soccer heating up in conference play

A 1-1 record over a two-game conference span was the recent result for the Vikings women's soccer team.
On Oct. 16, the Vikings lost for the first time in conference play to St. Ambrose.
The match started slow with both teams trading ball possession back and forth. The Vikings had some good shooting chances, but couldn't turn them into decent shots on goal. Outshooting their opponents 17-9, the team just couldn't convert any of them into goals. In the 82nd minute of the match, St. Ambrose's Kelsey Carroll was able to score the lone goal off a corner kick.
The Vikings were able to have a couple chances to tie things up in the last minutes of the match, but they couldn't even the scoring
Coach Ventsi Stoimirov said, "We didn't get a chance to put the ball in the back of the net. The girls did a tremendous job and I am pleased with the effort."
Senior defender Alexis Purdum, who suffered a head injury with 10 minutes left in the match, also had some comments.
"It was definitely a devastating loss, but I also think it was a great turning point for our team," Purdum said. "The team really came together and put a lot of nice things together trying to tie the score at 1-1."
She also said the 17 shots was the most the team has took the entire year.
A rebound against Mount Mercy was the result for the Vikings on Oct. 18. for five players on the team. They honored it with a 2-0 win. For most of the first half, the Vikings controlled ball possession with some chances to score. The match stayed even at 0-0 going into halftime.
In the second half, junior defender McKenzie McAdaragh opened the scoring in the 47th minute after finishing a pass from freshman defender Brittny Pokorny.
The Vikings almost had another goal from senior forward Kim Hall, but it was taken back due to an offside's call. Hall later scored in the 73rd minute.
"We had a lot of good combinations and a lot of good shots from several people." Purdum said. "We were excited that it was senior day and I think everybody pulled together in order to get that win."
Stoimirov said, "They were very composed on the ball. It created quality scoring chances."
