Angella Gonzalez was named the September Viking of the Month by the Student Leadership Team for her outstanding leadership in the Grand View community.
Gonzalez was nominated by a student who described her as "a member of the NSA board who has worked very hard for the Race for the Cure. She has also devoted much of her time to the Latino Festival and sits on the board as well. Angella is an awesome student who always finds time for her two cute little girls along with all the demands of school and her board work."
Ross Moffit, graduate assistant and assistant Student Leadership Team supervisor said, "We felt Angella showed true Viking Leadership this month and was a deserved winner."
Gonzalez is a sophomore nursing major involved in the Grand View Nursing Student Association (NSA), her daughters' PTA and a Democratic Party volunteer.
She said she was inspired to become involved at Grand View because she grew up with parents who were involved, and seeing them involved in the community helped.
"Once I got to Grand View I decided I would not take my experience here for granted," Gonzalez said.
She said she has always had a passion for helping people so by becoming involved in projects and organizations she feels like she can reach more people and change more lives than she could on her own. She strives to stay involved to influence others to get involved in their own ways.
Gonzalez said she has heard fellow nursing student and board member Vanessa Mata nominated her, but she was unaware until after she received the honor.
Gonzalez said, "I was shocked. Audrey Stone walked up to me while I was studying in the Wellness Center and congratulated me and I said, 'Thank you. For what?' She then explained she had gotten the email, so I checked mine and was surprised again."
Gonzalez also said she received several other congratulatory emails from friends who received the email before her.
Gonzalez said her favorite thing about Grand View is the family atmosphere.
"I went to other colleges where the faculty didn't care if you did well. I feel like the professors here really want you to do well," Gonzalez said.
She added she has had professors in and out of the nursing department and she knows if she needs help they would be willing to assist her even if she was not currently enrolled in one of their classes.
Kacey Barrow, English literature and writing senior said, "Angella is a perfect example of what a student leader should be on our campus."
