Hot tubs have been part of culture dating back to 600 B.C. when Phraotes, the king of Media, would have his servants put sizzling stones at the bottom at the bottom of his tub.

The Jacuzzi, developed by Joseph Jacuzzi with his six brothers was developed to help ease Rheumatoid Arthritis. The hot tub is also useful if your having trouble sleeping, if you have headaches, muscle and joint pain, diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis or Cerebral Palsy. The Jacuzzi was used by Franklin D. Roosevelt to help with the pains with Polio.

Hot tubs, like most things in the world, need to be properly maintained and cleaned. The temperature of the water should be constantly tested, as well as the chemicals put in the water. There are hotels everywhere which have public hot tubs and also offer hot tub suites for romantic evenings. Many of these places are not what you would call top-notch places.

With this being said, the cause for concern should, of course be how often maintenance and up keep actually happen.

Sexually transmitted diseases can survive in hot tubs when the chemicals are not properly distributed or when temperatures decline to levels around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The jets in the hot tubs which expel water opposed to air are more likely to stay hot longer. But what about the ones the expel air and how is one supposed to find out which public hot tubs have what? This isn't limited to public hot tubs either.

Jackie Williams, business junior, said she would use a hot tub is it were privately owned.

"If I knew it was clean, if I knew who was in and out of it. It is really nasty to use public hot tubs," Williams said.

Another complication arriving when using a hot tub is something called "hot tub lung," which is an uncommon infection or allergic reaction due to inhaling the bacterium Micro bacterium avium, which belongs to the same class of bacteria as tuberculosis.

There are many hot tubs in private homes and if the owners were to neglect their responsibilities that go along with owning a hot tub the results can be devastating.

Seeing how most private hot tubs get less use than public the chances of contracting an STD are larger when you hit public settings.

Topher Wanek, business junior, said, "I'm not concerned about it, put some bleach on it."

He said he frequently uses a hot tub at his apartment complex and he trusts the maintenance man who works at the facility.

Michelle Gersdorf, art education senior, has other thoughts about public hot tubs. "It's a skin crawling thought to think that you've been careful making choices to avoid something of that nature happening and then by someone else's mistake you contract something, or even worse what if an innocent and naive child contracted something," Gersdorf said.

Hot tubs help more people than they harm. As with all aspects of life it is important to be precautious when making decisions which can involve how your health can be infected.
