Starting with spring 2009 registration, Grand View students will have their first opportunity to sign up for a minor in women's studies.

The program was set up by professors Katharina Tumpek and Amy Getty, and will give students the opportunity to study issues as they relate to women.

Classes for the minor are available across different disciplines, so students will be able to take classes in almost every department.

"There will be courses in English, history and psychology," Katharina Tumpek, associate professor of history said, "there will also be one in sociology, as well as business and religion."

To obtain the minor, a total of 18 credit hours is required.

The first will come from the women's history class taught by either professor Tumpek or Getty.

The final 15 can be comprised of any approved courses from the catalogue.

The minor is now officially listed in the Grand View catalogue, but any students who have taken approved courses can officially declare the minor and have previous classes count.

"Most students are just realizing that they can declare it a minor, so if you've taken any of these classes already they can be grandfathered in," Tumpek said.

The program has been designed to focus on the perspectives of women through history and in the modern world.

Both professors wanted to bring more diversity to the classroom and focus on something most high schools and colleges lack in their curriculum.

"Dr. Kathy Tumpek and I created the women's studies minor because we felt there was a need to counterbalance a somewhat slanted curriculum. Most high schools and colleges expose students to the point of view of authors and thinkers who come from a male, white, and frequently upper or middle class perspective," Amy Getty, associate professor of English said.

"But there were not voices that fit other demographics, especially those of women. The women's studies minor is just a small step toward pulling more diversity into our classrooms," she said.
