The winner of the challenge by two votes was the south side team. Elizabeth Cox and Victoria Campbell, nursing professors and advisors for the NPOD students, came up with the idea to decorate the rooms. The students decorated the storage rooms on each end of their hall.
Ashley Heeren, nursing freshman and member of the north side team, said, "The goal was to make the storage rooms into study rooms for all of us to be able to come together and have a room that we could all work in."
Teams were determined by ends of the hall. North and south teams participated.
Each team received $50 for decorating and was told they could get donations from companies as well. The north team received donations from businesses wanting to remain anonymous. The south team was given a $100 donation from SVPA Architect.
The south team and also the winning team decorated their side with bright colors and one entire wall as a chalkboard.
Katie Freml, nursing freshman and south side team, said, "Our side decided to stay away from school colors because they are everywhere. We wanted a place to get together and study that was bright and fun."
The chalkboard idea came from south side team member Courtney Christianson, nursing freshman.
Christianson said, "I thought it would add a lot to the room, you can draw on it and leave other people messages or if you need a break from studying you can draw pictures on it."
Freml said, "It was really great getting to meet some of the girls on our floor that we haven't met yet."
Christianson said, "We have our door open all the time now and it isn't awkward anymore knocking on different girls' rooms if we have a question."
The north team decorated their side using school colors and on one wall a team member drew the Grand View Viking.
Heeren said, "We wanted the room to have a sense of school pride. We really just wanted that Grand View Viking feel."
The teams started decorating on Oct. 1 and decided to have the voting take place during homecoming when the nursing alumni were on campus. Voting took place Friday, Oct. 3 and lasted through Saturday, Oct. 4. Anyone wanting to vote came to Nielsen Hall and placed a vote into a box after looking at both sides of the floor.
Heeren said, "It was nice to see some of the nursing alumni looking at our rooms and voting; it was cool to hear about where they were working and what they were doing."
The winner of the room challenge won a $125 gift card to the restaurant of their choice.
Freml said, "We haven't decided yet on where we want to spend it at, but we are really excited to spend it."
Jena Butenhoff, nursing freshman and north side member said, "We had a lot of fun decorating and it was definitely a community building activity, I got to know some girls on my floor better."
