The Vikings' first game this week was played against conference leaders William Penn. The Vikings lost in a close game. The team managed only two runs in the first inning before being shut out the rest of the ballgame. Coach Lou Yacinich said it was a matter of good pitching.
"William Penn's pitcher did a good job. He shut us down," Coach Yacinich said.
The Vikings managed only five hits from 23 at-bats and left six runners on base. Senior infielder Bobby Habeger went 2-3 with a run scored. Junior Jason Ogden went one for three with an RBI.
In game two, the Vikings faltered under an offensive show as William Penn collected 14 hits from 31 at bats to win the game 15-5 in five innings. Ogden went one for two with two runs scored. Senior pitcher/infielder Heath Stein went two for three with an RBI and one run scored. Senior outfielder Danny Rohrs went one for two with three RBI's and a run scored.
"Offense beat us in the second game," Coach Yacinich said.
The Vikings traveled to Cedar Rapids taking on Mount Mercy in a doubleheader makeup next.
This time around the Vikings were able to produce on the offensive side. They were able collect 13 runs in both games. The teams spilt the doubleheader, winning the first game 13-6 and losing the second 18-13.
"In the second ball game, they out hit us and our pitchers struggled." Coach Yacinich said.
The Vikings continued their home field winning streak alive and delivered a 16-6 win against Iowa Wesleyan in eight innings on April 15.
The team achieved 20 hits from 40 at-bats to lead an offensive attack. After Iowa Wesleyan took an early lead, senior outfielder Doug Benson hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning to put the Vikings in the lead 4-1. The team was then able to score eight runs off of eight hits in the fourth inning increasing their lead to 12-3. Habeger hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and drove in the final run of the game to finish off the offensive day for the Vikings.
Junior pitcher Kyle Britton had a solid game. He gave up four runs and 11 hits but struck out four batters and had no walks. The win gave Britton his fourth of the season. Habeger went 5-6 with three runs and eight RBI's. Benson was three for five with two runs and four RBI's.
The Vikings' new record is now 16-15 and 9-5 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. They currently sit in fourth place in the conference standings which is 4.5 games back from leaders William Penn. The Vikings have yet to play seven games this season, four of those at home.
"We want to get on a role. It carries over into the tournament," Coach Yacinich said.
The MCC conference tournament takes place on May 1-3 with the Region and Super Region tournaments taking place after. If the Vikings get through, it all leads up to the NAIA World Series.
