As the school year is nearing its end, this means Grand View College men's and women's track season is also nearing its end. Both teams have struggled through the weather tattered season, but now have their eyes set on the conference meet.
The conference meet will be held May 1 and 2, at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. The meet usually brings good news for both the men's and women's teams. Last year both teams from Grand View brought home a conference championship.
Steven Hughes, history junior and member of the men's team, said, "Our main goal is to try and repeat our championship from last year, and also score well as individuals."
Hughes participates in the high jump, triple jump, long jump, javelin, and the 4x100 relay.
At last year's conference meet, Hughes won the high jump and came in second in the javelin. According to Hughes, many of the men have a chance to possibly win their events this year.
Kayla Gaskill, education sophomore, is a member of the women's team. Gaskill participates in the javelin, high jump, long jump, open 100, open 200, open 400, 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay.
Gaskill said, "We hope to defend last year's conference championship and also get better as a team."
Coach Jerry Monner, head men's and women's track coach, is also looking forward to the conference meet.
Monner said, "This year we have more depth and the roster is bigger. We are better due to the fact we have more versatility as far as who can run the relays."
The two teams only have five meets left this year. This Saturday, April 19, the teams travel to Grinnell.
Monner said, "This meet is always competitive, so the team is looking forward to it."
