A linguistics major would describe Kirk Ferentz as monotone. The 10-year head coach places emphasis on a word about as often as legendary Hawkeye announcer Bob Brooks misses an Iowa football game.
But in the basement of the Hayden Fry football complex after his Nov. 18 press conference, Ferentz morphed into Herm Edwards when he talked about Shonn Greene.
"If you look at the numbers, those are so impressive," said Ferentz, doing his best Scott van Pelt impersonation.

The Maverick wrestling team continued non-team events Saturday at the Nichols Open, where junior All-American Jacob Marrs led the Mavs with a third-place finish at 197 pounds.
Finishing with a 5-1 record, Marrs fell to Trevor Brandvold of the University of Wisconsin, but came back to nab third from Tom Block of Minnesota State, Mankato.

Although the regular season ended badly for the Jennies, they are still the No. 1-ranked team as the South Central Regional tournament starts Friday.
The Jennies' soccer team fell on hard times last week in losing to Northwest Missouri State 1-0 and Nebraska-Omaha 3-0.

Last year's Blackshirt defense didn't give Nebraska's video staff much material for their "Hits of the Game" highlight reel.
The segment is shown on the jumbo screen inside Memorial Stadium during the fourth quarter of Cornhusker home games and reflected Nebraska's porous defensive showing in 2007.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Matt Slauson called it "classic Nebraska."
Nebraska's senior offensive guard was talking about the option rushing attack the Cornhuskers employed during NU's 56-28 victory at Kansas State on Saturday, but he might as well have been talking about the game in general.

It's one of those things all coaches invariably say during the course of the season. Usually toward the end of the year, they talk about how much they've enjoyed coaching their players and how they'll remember this year for the rest of their lives.
Kirk Ferentz morphed into that stereotype at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. But, in this case, there's a distinct difference between Ferentz and others who have expressed the sentiment: This isn't the first time the 10-year head coach has praised his players without being asked by the media.

A young child waits for his favorite athlete outside the playing field. He is in awe of what he has just witnessed on the football field. He is nervous, yet anxious; and his shy demeanor is evident from his stature. In his hand, he holds a wrinkled Western Illinois football game ticket.

It seemed like a normal Tuesday at Nebraska's weekly press conference.
That all changed quickly once practice was about to end.
Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini made the decision to officially hand out the tradition-rich Blackshirts that grace the pads of Nebraska's top defenders, but in the midst of the good news, Pelini also suspended one of the team's standout defenders.

With 13 minutes and 56 seconds left, in front of a raucous sea of Illini Orange, Ricky Stanzi completed three passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, and after Andy Brodell's feet touched the end zone turf, only 2:14 had come off the clock.
Just 7:32 later, Stanzi did it again; running for 14 yards and completing the two-point conversion to Allen Reisner to cap the 36-yard drive. Stanzi's pass evened the score with Illinois at 24-24 in just 1:24.

When I think of a pep rally, like the one advertised by the UMKC Athletics Department last week, I envision a vocal, raucous student body at fever pitch, egged on, perhaps, by a spirited cheer squad and a marching band.
I hear blaring horns, thundering percussion and feedback from a hot microphone.

As a sports fan, last weekend was overall a pretty good one for me. Two of the three football teams I follow won. In addition to rooting for the Beavers, I'm an Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings fan. Iowa's win over then third-ranked Penn State was obviously impressive.

When the Minnesota State soccer team left Winona two weeks ago following a tough loss to Winona State, the deflated Mavericks dropped to fourth in the Northern Sun standings and fifth in the region rankings.
The mood was much more positive Sunday, with MSU players' faces showing smiles, not frowns.

The UMKC Kangaroos showed some swagger against the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks, but faded late in a 71-56 loss Sunday night at Allen Field House.
UMKC led throughout the first half but Kansas caught up with the Roos at the break, and took over the game on the strength of Cole Aldrich's 13 second half points.

In the first possession of overtime, Illinois State drove down to the Leathernecks 6-yard-line. The score stood even at 45-45. The brutally cold game had come down to one play.
Redbirds' quarterback Kevin Brockway dropped back to pass and the 'Necks defensive pressure was closing the pocket; he lobbed the ball to the corner of the end zone.

UMKC's tension charged 4-3 shootout victory over top seeded Oakland University was a two-fold triumph for the Kangaroos' men's soccer team.

Tournament systems work for basketball, but wouldn't, however, work in college football. College football is unique in the way that every regular season game is meaningful. Each game is, in a sense, a playoff game. The season is short and with many good teams, losing once diminishes the chances of making it to the national title game significantly.
